I have had that happen and I think they grow from spores in the compost
That batch of compost should be long gone, so hopefully won't come back...
Yuk. I thought you were talking about the white stuff at first. It's not mould is it?
Not sure what the white is. Possibly minerals on top of the compost? Or possibly mould :p
